From there they can get the angle relative to the ground and use experience to identify the most likely location of the shooter: concealed and high up if possible with a clear line of sight. Inexperienced assassins are likely to choose a rooftop in an urban environment, more experienced shooters will pick less obvious positions.
The investigators will probably start at the rooftop and work their way from most likely position to least, looking for chemical residue and of course and casings or other evidence.
It’s a long and slow process.
What’s the range and what shooting experience does the shooter have? It sounds like your investigators might be in trouble since the shooter would likely use a bolt action hunting rifle if common caliber like a .308. The bullet will massively deform or potentially disintegrate after impact.
Firing one round from a bolt action rifle effectively ensures the shooter took the casing with them.
Next I’m going to look for motive; who wants this guy dead? Then means; who could make this shot or convince/hire someone to (you know who the shooter is, but the investigator needs to look at all the possibilities since they don’t)? And who had the opportunity? Then I’ll start looking for other clues; money transfers, large cash withdrawals etc.
It would probably be a Remington 700 in .308 Winchester. A very common, very available rifle used for hunting, and to a bullet a human is just another animal so there isn’t really a major difference between a sniper rifle and a hunting rifle.
